Antique Cars
Hagerty broadly defines antique or classic vehicles as stock vehicles built from the turn of the century through 1979. To qualify for the insurance program, vehicles 1979 and older must meet the following requirements:
-
Usage and Mileage
Our policy allows the collector vehicle to be used for club functions, exhibitions, organized meets, tours and even occasional pleasure driving (includes driving to work or errands less than 20 times per year) — it just can’t be a daily driver. Driving to work or errands between 20-60 times a year may be considered in some states.
-
Usage and mileage requirements may differ based on the vehicle that is being insured, such as collector trucks or vehicles that are 1980 and newer. Please review specific vehicle guidelines for this information.
Mileage of 3,500 or less is generally consistent with operating vehicles that have collectible value. Mileage up to 7,500 may be considered in some states.
-
Storage
Collector vehicles generally must be stored in a private, enclosed, secure structure when not in use. Appropriate storage examples include:
- Private residential garages
- Private pole building or barns
- Rental storage units
-
Carports may be considered in all states except AK, CA, FL or HI
- Must not be within 100 miles of the coast in TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC or NC
- Vehicle value must not exceed $30,000
- Motorcycles and some modified vehicles are not eligible if stored in a carport
-
Parking Garages may be considered in all states except AK, CA or HI
- Must have 24 hour security such as an alarm system, guard or video surveillance
- Must be limited access (not for public use)
- Assigned parking spaces are preferable
-
Car hauling trailers and other enclosed structures may be considered in all states except AK, CA or HI
- Must be anchored to a stationary object and/or located in a secure location
- The value of the collector vehicle(s) stored inside should not exceed $50,000
- Collector vehicle(s) valued at more than $50,000, the trailer must also be stored inside (warehouse, airplane hangar, pole building, etc.)
-
Vehicles kept in driveways may be considered in all states except AK, CA, CO, FL, HI or KS
- Must not be within 100 miles of the coast in TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC or NC
- Vehicle value must not exceed $30,000
- Motorcycles and some modified vehicles are not eligible if stored in a driveway
-
Unacceptable storage includes:
- Temporary storage facilities assembled of canvas or plastic (i.e. tents, domes or igloos)
- Streets
- Parking lots
- Public parking garages
-
Driver Eligibility
In most states, we can’t offer coverage to drivers with a serious infraction. Serious infractions include:
- Alcohol-related offenses
- Reckless driving
- Excessive speed violations
All household driving records are subject to underwriter review. Generally one or two minor violations or accidents are acceptable.
California Guidelines:
Please note: A Named Driver Exclusion is available in your selected state and can be used when driving records or claims history would otherwise disqualify the risk. We cannot exclude the named insured or any other person who is listed on the title or registration of the vehicle(s).
-
Vehicles That May Not Qualify
Because we provide low-cost, Guaranteed Value™ coverage, we are not able to provide coverage for certain vehicles due to how they are used and the increased risk associated. Examples of vehicles not eligible include:
- Camping, off-road, or utility-type vehicles
- Vehicles driven on a daily basis
- Commercial-use vehicles
- Motorcycles with performance modifications
- Any vehicle modified with nitrous components
- Dune buggies
Please Note: Hagerty differs from standard insurance in that we don’t have a price for every risk. We determine eligibility based upon the accumulation of all risk characteristics related to our program guidelines.
-
Coverage Limits
Hagerty can offer liability limits less than or equal to the limits carried on the Personal Auto Policy (PAP).
We can consider Business Auto Policies. However, the maximum limits we will offer are $100/$300 liability and state minimum limits for UM/UIM. We can consider higher limits when there is a Drive Other Car (DOC) or Individual Named Insured (INI) endorsement attached. Exception: The maximum limits we will offer in GA, KS, MN, NY, NC and NH are state minimum limits. A copy of the BAP and DOC/INI endorsement (if applicable) are required.
Umbrella liability limit requirements can also be met, except in GA, KS, MN, NY, NC and NH. Proof of the umbrella requirement is required.
-
Daily Use Vehicles
- All household members with a valid driver’s license must have a vehicle to drive on a daily basis
- Clients with less than one daily use vehicle per driver may be considered when insuring a 1979 and older vehicle in some states
- The daily use vehicle should be reliable
- Motorcycles and public transportation are not considered viable daily use vehicles by our program in most cases (contact us for details)
- Applicants must also maintain daily use insurance in their own names
